Attorney SEO Series - Choosing a Host

Posted by admin 0n Nov 23, 2008    in Blog, SEO

A website host, often just called host, is a business that provides the service of storing (hosting) your website files and making them available to users through the internet.  You have many options when deciding where to host your site, and this article should help you make the best one.

Free Hosts

  • Free doesn’t always mean better.  Though they are in fact free, these companies often place banners and other advertisements on your site in order to recoup lost profits. This alone should be enough reason to decline the free hosting option.
  • Additionally, free hosts disappear at an alarming rate. Imagine logging on to find your site down, and all of your work lost. Without a viable means of recovering the costs of maintenance and upkeep, many of these companies have no choice but to simply end its service.
  • Free hosts seldom provide comprehensive website packages. To keep costs low, these companies will strip down their maximum amount of web space, FTP Access (this will limit you to designing your website to the hosts online page builder), reliability, or speed of access.

You’re site is how your clients will perceive you, and the small monthly fee of paid hosting is worth the control and security that a free host just can’t offer.

Paid Hosts (Commercial Hosting)

Depending on your needs, hosting can range from about $5.00 to about $20.00 a month. If you are paying more with your current host, then you may want to consider switching hosts. Contact me, if you any need help with this process.

When selecting a commercial host be sure to review their and compare their services thoroughly. The list below should give you a brief guide on what to look for.

  • Uptime - This number describes how often their server is functioning and serving sites. Look for a minimum of 99% (in fact this number should idealy be closer to 99.5% or higher).
  • Bandwidth - This will describe how much traffic your site will allow. For smaller sites (like those offered by legal practice), this should not really be an issue.
  • Disk Space - Look for a minimum of 5MB. This number designates how many files you are allowed to host on your server. Again, for smaller websites, this number should not be a significant concern.
  • FTP, PHP, Perl CGI-BIN access, SSI, .htaccess, telnet, SSH, crontabs- If you are paying for your site, then expect all of these to be included. Ofcoarse, it is largely defined by what you would like your site to do.
  • Email, Auto responders, POP3, Mail Forwarding - These are great features that you should look for, especially if your website will be the online home of your business.

My Personal Experience

Expect to make a trade off between price, service, or reliability when searching for your new hosting company. For the last 5 years I have been using Start Logic as my host, and I am very happy with their service. If you are looking to go with Start Logic for your hosting, be sure to check their site on the weekend before purchasing your plan. Though they offer hosting for $5.95 (which is still a great price), they often drop the price down to $4.95 a month during the weekend.

If you have any questions or comments let me know below.
Thanks for staying tuned!
